Bringing Jesus Home, Part 1

“Because You're mine, I walk the line.” Those words of the familiar Johnny Cash hit could have been penned by the Apostle Paul nearly 2000 years ago. In the letter to the Colossians, Paul motivates us to follow Jesus wherever He takes us. He repeatedly points out the need for us to grasp the significance of our position in Christ and how our walk is transformed by His presence in our lives. In this short letter, Paul refers to Jesus by name more than 50 times. As we work our way through this letter over the next couple months, the significance of this will become evident. Paul’s objective is clear to point the Colossians to Jesus Christ and encourage their walk in Him. The equation that we will find in Colossians is Jesus + nothing = Life. This is not the equation that the world proposes to us, Jesus + our job, our family, our friends, our car, our hobbies, our (you fill in the blank). This isn’t even the question that the church has proposed for much of history, Jesus + works, Jesus + tradition, Jesus + experience, Jesus + ____ (you fill in the blank). With all these obstacles that are placed in our path it is no wonder that we have trouble walking the line. Fortunately for the Colossians and for us, Paul knows that in Christ we can walk the line.

As a church we desire to be REAL people making a REAL difference in a REAL world through the power of Christ, but most of the time we don’t think that we have what it takes to make a real difference. There is an order to the process. It all begins with the power of Christ being unleashed in our lives. The power of Christ is unleashed as we become G4 followers of Christ who: GATHER corporately for celebration and teaching, GROW spiritually through community, GIVE sacrificially in service to the church, and GO unashamedly with the gospel into the world. Desiring that we would see the power of Christ unleashed at Harvest Pointe, our 2008-2009 Church Goal is that…Each One of Us Would Take Our Next Steps in Becoming G4 Followers of Christ. Throughout this series we will explore the four elements of being a G4 follower of Christ and how we can take our next steps in each one of them.

Produce

The end result of growing up in this challenging culture will be a country of adults whose standards have been lowered and whose sensitivities have been blunted. So, how can we as a church transform a generation for Christ? We must GO Orange!

The time is now for the church and parents to come together. We can’t afford to wait. The next generation’s future is at stake. So, we must Go Orange! Orange is all about synchronizing the church and parents around a master-plan to build faith and character into the lives of sons and daughters. The only thing that will matter 100 years from now is someone’s faith in Jesus Christ. So, we must get our priorities straight, lock arms in partnership with one another, and seek to produce a generation that seeks after the Lord. Over the next three weeks my hope is that you will see your part in this effort. Regardless of whether you are a parent, a grandparent, not a parent, or a parent to be we all have a part in transforming the next generation for Christ.

The Bible makes it quite clear that kids are uniquely special to God. If you examine what the Scriptures say about children, you will discover how precious they are to Him. In His eyes, the represent a multitude of attributes and possibilities, they are a gift from Him, they are to be taught, they are valuable and to be protected, and they are invited to have a genuine relationship with Him.
