On the Cutting Room Floor

Join us as we seek to get a closer look at our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This will be a two part series that will take us through the Gospel of Mark, story by story, examining the life of Christ. The first part (beginning on June 20 and running through the end of September) answers the question: Who is Jesus? It climaxes with Peter's confession in Mark 8:27-30. The second part (beginning in January and running through Easter) answers the question: What did he come to do? It climaxes with Jesus' death and resurrection in Mark 15 and 16. Our hope is that through this series we will gain more knowledge and add more dimension to our understanding and appreciation of our Savior, which help us to worship Him more fully and follow Him more passionately.

Holy Living

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is meant to transform our lives from the inside out. Unfortunately, most people who will attend church this Easter believe that the process works just the opposite of what the gospel explains. They believe that God is pleased with them and they are changed as they transform their lives from the outside in. Their motto is..."fake it, until you make it." This is not the true gospel that is found in the Bible! God's word teaches us that the gospel is not about what we can do to earn God's favor and grow spiritually, but is about what Jesus Christ has done for us through His life, death, and resurrection. The gospel truth of the resurrection is that we must repent of self-effort, self-reliance, self-dependance by dying to self and coming to find new life (being born again) through Jesus Christ and living a changed life (holy living) as the power of Christ enables me. Join us for this series and maybe you will find yourself forever changed from the inside out.

Godly Stewardship

The Israelites had been released from captivity and a group of them returned to Jerusalem. In 516 BC they rebuild the temple under the prophetic encouragement of Haggai and Zechariah. About 50 years later another group of exiles return with Ezra. 13 years after that Nehemiah is permitted by the Persian king to go to Jerusalem and rebuild the walls. He stays about 12 years and goes back to the royal court. After a time he makes a second trip.

Here’s the kicker - in each of those occasions the Jewish leader finds that the people in Jerusalem had lost their spiritual edge.

    * Their faith was dull.
    * Their enthusiasm for serving the Lord muted at best.
    * Their willingness to cut corners on law obedience quite pliable.
    * Sacrificial devotion was reduced from fire to barely warm ashes.

Sabbath was ignored. Intermarriage with foreigners. Corrupt priesthood. Rampant injustice. Bored, cheap ritual worship.

This is the situation into which God spoke through Malachi, the last prophet of the Old Testament era. And though these words are from around 425 B.C., they speak with remarkable clarity and relevance to the church today.

Godly Discipline

The Israelites had been released from captivity and a group of them returned to Jerusalem. In 516 BC they rebuild the temple under the prophetic encouragement of Haggai and Zechariah. About 50 years later another group of exiles return with Ezra. 13 years after that Nehemiah is permitted by the Persian king to go to Jerusalem and rebuild the walls. He stays about 12 years and goes back to the royal court. After a time he makes a second trip.

Here’s the kicker - in each of those occasions the Jewish leader finds that the people in Jerusalem had lost their spiritual edge.

    * Their faith was dull.

Be Patient in Prayer

The book of James is basic, entry-level, in-your-face Christianity. A real workout. Nothing fancy. No glamor-cize at the club. Just crunches, push-ups, and heavy bag work in a smelly basement gym. If you are up to the challenge, James will shape you into a hard-body believer. During this series, Fit Faith, we’ll tackle some of the most practical teaching outside of the gospels. James was known as "James the Just", someone who put his faith into practice in a real and practical way. James will stretch us to grasp the importance of putting our faith into action as described in God's word. Are you ready to get fit?

Members, Our Partners

Our desire is that every member advances in their journey as a Biblical servant leader by realizing and fulfilling God’s calling in their life in the church and community. This will only happen as grasp what the Bible has to say about the nature and scope of the of servant leaders within the church. Over the next four weeks, we will examine the leadership structure that is outlined in the New Testament for the church and how that works itself out here at Harvest Pointe. Ultimately, our hope is for everyone to realize that they are called by God, from the moment of salvation, to play their part in our combined efforts to fulfill the Great Commission and Great Commandment as a church.

My Sister's Keeper

Movies speak to the reality of who we are as people and the things that captivate our hearts and minds. Reel2Real: Harvest Pointe @ The Movies is a sermon series using movies as a backdrop to teach some fundamental truths. Each week we will peak behind the curtain and see the underlying issue that each movie is dealing with and seek to discover what the Bible has to say about these issues. Join us as we seek to go from reel to real in our relationship with Jesus Christ.

If you are wondering why we would pick these movies, please know that we are not advocating that you go and see every movie on the list of “Harvest Pointe @ The Movies”. Do your homework (visit www.previewonline.org for a review) and then go and see the movie if that is your decision. We use these movies as a launching place or theme for relevant discussion.

Redemption

Our aim over the next six weeks is to walk through the story of Naomi and Ruth from the Old Testament book of Ruth. As we make our way through this Tale of Two Women, my hope is that you will see how God works in a providential way to reveal His sovereignty and goodness. One of the best ways that you can get the most out of this study is to devote to reading through this story once each week for the next six weeks. This is one of the most well written stories in the whole Bible and it follows the lives these two women as they experience suffering, reward, blessing, risk, wisdom, and ultimately redemption. There are many truths for us to grasp as we journey with Naomi and Ruth.

Is It Your Victory?

Life is short. Then it's over. Or is it? We are reminded everyday that life as we know it will come to an end. Is it really over when it's over or is there something else? Everyone wonders what is next, what is around the bend. Did Jesus really rise from the dead? If so, what does that mean for us? Over four weeks, we will explore these questions as we look at the evidence and ramifications of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We will see that when Jesus rose from the dead He radically altered both life and death for every person that believes that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again. Are you awake? If not, you need to be!

Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit

There have been many famous people who have uttered memorable words in their final moments of life. Last words say a lot about a person's state of mind and character. Nowhere else is this more true than with Jesus' last words from the Cross. His words during this intense time of suffering captivate those who are willing to look and see their meaning to those there that day, to us in this present time, and for each individual's future. Let's look at this gruesome and glorious day in history, where the Words and Work of Jesus speak loudly of God's love, justice, holiness, mercy and grace.

To Sow or Not to Sow?

The Bible contains four times the number of verses on money and materialism than verses on faith and prayer. Also, forty percent of the parables that Jesus taught in the gospels deal with money. Clearly, God is interested in how we use the resources He has given to us. During this five-week series we will discover some key principles to handling money and possessions in a way that honors God.

Taking it On the Road

“Because You're mine, I walk the line.” Those words of the familiar Johnny Cash hit could have been penned by the Apostle Paul nearly 2000 years ago. In the letter to the Colossians, Paul motivates us to follow Jesus wherever He takes us. He repeatedly points out the need for us to grasp the significance of our position in Christ and how our walk is transformed by His presence in our lives. In this short letter, Paul refers to Jesus by name more than 50 times. As we work our way through this letter over the next couple months, the significance of this will become evident. Paul’s objective is clear to point the Colossians to Jesus Christ and encourage their walk in Him. The equation that we will find in Colossians is Jesus + nothing = Life. This is not the equation that the world proposes to us, Jesus + our job, our family, our friends, our car, our hobbies, our (you fill in the blank). This isn’t even the question that the church has proposed for much of history, Jesus + works, Jesus + tradition, Jesus + experience, Jesus + ____ (you fill in the blank). With all these obstacles that are placed in our path it is no wonder that we have trouble walking the line. Fortunately for the Colossians and for us, Paul knows that in Christ we can walk the line.

He repeatedly points out the need for us to grasp the significance of our position in Christ and how our walk is transformed by His presence in our lives.
Go

As a church we desire to be REAL people making a REAL difference in a REAL world through the power of Christ, but most of the time we don’t think that we have what it takes to make a real difference. There is an order to the process. It all begins with the power of Christ being unleashed in our lives. The power of Christ is unleashed as we become G4 followers of Christ who: GATHER corporately for celebration and teaching, GROW spiritually through community, GIVE sacrificially in service to the church, and GO unashamedly with the gospel into the world. Desiring that we would see the power of Christ unleashed at Harvest Pointe, our 2008-2009 Church Goal is that…Each One of Us Would Take Our Next Steps in Becoming G4 Followers of Christ. Throughout this series we will explore the four elements of being a G4 follower of Christ and how we can take our next steps in each one of them.

Produce

The end result of growing up in this challenging culture will be a country of adults whose standards have been lowered and whose sensitivities have been blunted. So, how can we as a church transform a generation for Christ? We must GO Orange!

The time is now for the church and parents to come together. We can’t afford to wait. The next generation’s future is at stake. So, we must Go Orange! Orange is all about synchronizing the church and parents around a master-plan to build faith and character into the lives of sons and daughters. The only thing that will matter 100 years from now is someone’s faith in Jesus Christ. So, we must get our priorities straight, lock arms in partnership with one another, and seek to produce a generation that seeks after the Lord. Over the next three weeks my hope is that you will see your part in this effort. Regardless of whether you are a parent, a grandparent, not a parent, or a parent to be we all have a part in transforming the next generation for Christ.

The Bible makes it quite clear that kids are uniquely special to God. If you examine what the Scriptures say about children, you will discover how precious they are to Him. In His eyes, the represent a multitude of attributes and possibilities, they are a gift from Him, they are to be taught, they are valuable and to be protected, and they are invited to have a genuine relationship with Him.
