As we continue our workouts in the book of James, we quickly see James as a trainer of those who would claim to be followers of Jesus Christ. I believe that James had a strong disposition to challenge people to go beyond mental acknowledgement that Jesus lived. He desired them to allow Jesus to come into their lives and perform an extreme makeover of their whole being: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. This is what you might consider a total workout at the gym. If you want to be fit physically you move beyond acknowledgment of the existence of the gym and make your way through the doors in order to get a workout. It requires taking the truths you know about fitness and applying those truths to your life. Easier said than done.
This week as we continue to seek to develop a Fit Faith, James is going to challenge us to apply the truth that we have received from God, the good Father who has called us into a relationship with himself through His son, Jesus Christ. He is the one who redeemed us and equips us for living life in this word as we wait for our true home in heaven. The BIG IDEA: of verses 19-27 of James 1 is that Obedience is the trademark of the true child of God. If we want to get fit, we have to hear the word and do what it tells us as we seek to apply it in our lives. Sounds pretty simple, but for some of you hearing the truth may be a bit hard to swallow.
