  • Series: Walk the Line: A study of Colossians

After exalting Jesus for nearly 11 chapters, the writer of the book of Hebrews encourages his readers to look to Jesus, the founder and perfector of our faith. That is exactly what Paul does for the Colossians as he continues his letter to them in chapter 1. Both writers understood the fact that as finite, sinful people we have a very short spiritual attention span. It doesn't help that there are so many things that can distract us from our walk with Jesus. Last week we began our study of this important letter from Paul to the church in Colossae. We discovered that walking the line is all about pleasing Jesus and that it is only in Christ that we can walk the line. Only as we are transformed by his power can we walk in a manner that is worthy of His name. This week we will see that to keep on track, we must keep our eyes on Jesus. This same principle holds true to our driving, right? If you want to keep you car between the lines, you have to keep your eyes on the road. Some of you haven't yet grasped this principle when it comes to your driving. You sightsee a little too much. You talk on your phone a little too much. You dig through your purse a little too much. And the next thing you know you throwing up rocks on the side of the road, getting honked at by the car in the lane beside you, or even worse. The key to driving is to keep your eyes on the road. The key to following Jesus is to keep your eyes on Jesus. There are so many things that draw our attention away from the One who has saved us. The Colossians had many things that were challenging their focus as well. Let's see what Paul had to say to them in Colossians 1:15-23 and what it means for us today.
